
Selecting the correct antibiotic to give a patient before surgery is essential to preventing infection as a complication of surgery.
Infections may be caused by a wide variety of organisms. Some types of infections are more common with certain types of surgeries than with others. Selecting the correct antibiotic before surgery to prevent infections is key in assuring that a patient has a rapid and uncomplicated recovery from surgery.
The chart below compares the number of patients who received the approriate preventive antibiotic before their surgery at Cedars-Sinai to other hospitals nationally and in California.
A higher number is better than a lower number.

The chart above shows how Cedars-Sinai's performance on this measure compared with the top 10% of hospitals in the United States, the national average for hospitals, the top 10% of hospitals in California and the California average. These data reflect care given to patients at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from January through March 2009. The national and California data reflect care given to patients from January through December 2008.
