Imaging Technologies

The S. Mark Taper Foundation Imaging Center is a state-of-the-art facility that is committed to staying on the forefront of medical imaging technology. We are continually incorporating the latest advancements in imaging. This center was one of the first to become a filmless center, with digital imaging replacing traditional films. The use of digital imaging allows authorized physicians in the Cedars-Sinai community to quickly consult images and reports from the S. Mark Taper Foundation Imaging Center.

We have six 1.5 Tesla MR scanners and seven CT scanners. The nuclear medicine department has 13 cameras, which includes two PET scanners, one PET/CT, with another PET/CT installation in process. A 3T MR scanner will be available soon.

Dual Source 64-slice CT Scanner

Our new Dual Source CT scanner has two X-ray tubes oriented at 90 degrees to one another. This allows us to obtain the 180 degrees of information required for tomography in half the time of a standard, fast (64-slice) CT. Our images can be obtained in 83 milliseconds.

D-SPECT

This new technology, designed to transform nuclear medicine imaging, reduces imaging time 10-fold, while improving imaging quality. Patient imaging position changes from lying flat on the table with arms up to setting semi-reclined or upright with one arm at shoulder lever and the other arm down---allowing for greater comfort. This new machine has the potential to improve our ability to detect significant blockages in coronary arteries.

PET/CT Scanner

Our center is one of the first to have an "open" PET/CT scanner. A PET/CT scanner combines two imaging modalities: positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT). This combination makes it possible to fuse anatomic information furnished by the CT scan with molecular imaging information provided by the PET imaging. With this technology, not only can abnormal cell function be detected, but it can be anatomically mapped with great precision. This precision allows more accurate diagnosis and staging, which can help lead to better outcomes.

MR Scanners

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) use a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images (cross sections) of the body. MR technology produces soft-tissue images and allows the radiologist and physician to evaluate the different types of body tissue, as well as distinguish normal, healthy tissue from diseased tissue. An MRA is specifically designed to look at blood vessels, veins and arteries.

3T MR Scanner

This high-field magnetic resonance imaging is excellent for use in brain, neurological and musculoskeletal imaging and can produce quicker scanning and improved image quality.
